Bancho Sarayashiki "さらやしき"
Bancho Sarayashiki "さらやしき"
[Framed Art Poster]
A samurai named Aoyama wanted his maid, Okiku, to become his mistress, but she refused. He hid one of the family's ten valuable plates and accused Okiku of breaking it. She counted the plates repeatedly but always reached nine. Aoyama became angry and killed her by throwing her in a well. Since then, Okiku's ghost has been heard counting from one to nine with a terrible shriek, and some say the ghost can be appeased by someone shouting "ten." The story is associated with Himeji Castle, a famous tourist attraction in Japan.
