Kohada Koheiji was an actor who is said to have lived during the later Edo Period. Legend has it that his wife had an affair and conspired with her lover to kill him. After his death, Kohada Koheiji became a vengeful ghost and haunted them. He killed his wife, and her lover went insane and killed himself. This story was later turned into a novel by Santō Kyōden in 1807 and was adapted into several Kabuki plays, including one by Tsuriya Nanboku in 1808 and another by Suzuki Senzaburō in 1925.
